Updates: Potties, adoption and more

Hello

For those of you that have been through this...when your child is potty training and you're in the car, driving through a large residential neighborhood and your child says "poo-poo, mama, I potty" and starts to get upset. What do you do? Stop and knock on someone's door? Tell the child it's OK to have an accident? What to do? We continue to have success in the potty while at home. Out and about is not so good as when she alerts us she usually has to sit on a big potty and then gets freaked out or we're somewhere with no bathroom nearby. At home she wears real underwear. Out and about it's pull ups. Any advice would be fantastic.

On the adoption front...our application was accepted and we've received a contract with the agency we've chosen. We are now deciding if a wait time of possibly 3 to 5 years is something we're OK with. We also are discussing if we are open to adopting a child with special needs. In China, special needs can mean neurological disorders all the way to birthmarks. Mr. B and I feel that we have the ways and means to support a child with certain special needs but we're still doing a bit of soul-searching on the whole adoption process. Please note--I have always wanted to adopt. Always. In fact, my life plan back in the day was to stay single and adopt. Add to that my colitis and pre-cancer scares and having to have a colonoscopy every 6 months and facing the possibility of having my colon removed in the near future, just makes it seem like an option that is better for my health. This is NOT about not wanting to be pregnant again or not wanting to go through labor again. My pregnancy and labor were textbook perfect and easy. Doctors came in to see me after Miss F was born to say that they'd heard I had this perfect labor-at-home, arrive, check in, baby out in a couple pushes, everything done in less than 4 hours total. So many of you have been asking and so many have asked if that is the reason. It's not. I promise. I know I have low pain tolerance and a delicate constitution but I could do it again, I'm just not sure it's best for my butt in more ways than just making it bigger.

Yesterday we had gymnastics and then Miss F went to daycare. I did errands, cleaned up, hit a bucket of golf balls (started my lessons this week), ate gelato and then went to a moms night out bowling. I beat my best bowling score of a 35 with a 54. Woot!

Today we went on a bike ride, had a park playgroup, I was attacked by fire ants and am now off to take benadryl to keep the swelling down. Miss F ran in the sprinklers and is now napping.

Some people use those portable potties, like from the One Step Ahead catalog. You could pull over and do something like that. Otherwise I'd say the only thing you can do is try to go before you get in the car, remind her that you won't be near a potty again until you get home. If she has to go in the car, I'd just say "please wait until we get home", I don't think I would give permission to go and if she has an accident just say "oh no big deal, next time we will have to remember to go before we get in the car" and then move on.
